IT'S NO SECRET THAT BUFFALO IS A SPORTS CITY.

WE LOVE OUR BILLS.

WE LOVE OUR SABERS.

AND I'VE HAD A CHANCE OVER THE LAST 15 YEARS TO WATCH THIS THIS COMMUNITY EMBRACE UB AND OTHER COLLEGE ATHLETICS AS WELL.

TONIGHT, I WILL CERTAINLY DO MY BEST TO TUNE IN AND WATCH THE GOLDEN GRIFFINS HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY.

I KNOW OUR ESTEEMED PROFESSOR OVER THERE.

I'M SURE YOU'RE GOING TO BE ROOTING ON THE GOLDEN GRIFFINS AS THEY TAKE ON MINNESOTA.

BUT ONE NAME SYNONYMOUS WITH SPORTS IN BUFFALO IS HOWARD SIMON.

AND NOT JUST AS A BROADCASTER, BUT ALSO AS A PARTICIPANT.

SO HOWARD AND I MET EACH OTHER PROBABLY, YOU KNOW, 15, 18, 20 YEARS AGO.

I WAS I HAD A BROTHER THAT PLAYED FOR GR 55 AND THAT WORKED AT GR 55, PLAYED ON THE SOFTBALL TEAM.

AND AT THE TIME HOWARD HAD JUST COME OVER, HE WAS NEW TO THE NEW TO THE TEAM AT GR 55 AND THEY HAD A SOFTBALL TEAM AND HOWARD DECIDES HE'S GOING TO BE THE TEAM PLAYER AND COME AND JOIN US TO PLAY.

AND HIS FIRST TIME UP AT BAT HE LACES THE SNOT OUT OF THE BALL RIGHT TO THE CHEST OF THE SECOND BASEMAN AND LINES OUT SECOND TIME UP AT BAT HE HITS A BALL GROUNDER TO SHORTSTOP.

HALFWAY DOWN, HE GRABS HIS LEG AND THAT WAS THE LAST TIME HE PLAYED SOFTBALL.

AND I STARTED TO REALIZE AS I ENTERED MY 40 SECONDS HOW EASY IT IS TO PULL CERTAIN MUSCLES.

AND IT WAS AN HONOR, THOUGH, TO TO MEET HIM THAT DAY BECAUSE HE WAS AN ICON IN THE SPORTS BROADCASTING COMMUNITY.

AND I'M A SPORTS GUY, SO IT'S AN HONOR TO HAVE HIM HERE TODAY ON HIS ON HIS RETIREMENT.

SO IF I MAY, PLEASE LET ME READ THIS RESOLUTION.

THE ERIE COUNTY LEGISLATURE SEEKS TO HONOR INDIVIDUALS IN ERIE COUNTY THAT ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN THE COMMUNITY THROUGH THEIR EFFORTS.

AND. WHEREAS, HOWARD SIMON WAS BORN IN BROOKLYN, GREW UP IN LONG ISLAND AND FIRST CAME TO BUFFALO IN 1980 TO ATTEND BUFFALO STATE COLLEGE.

SIMON WANTED TO BECOME A SPORTS BROADCASTER FROM A YOUNG AGE, AND AFTER BEING IMMERSED IN BUFFALO SPORTS DURING HIS COLLEGE YEARS, READING, WATCHING AND LISTENING TO THE LOCAL BROADCASTERS AND JOURNALISTS, HE KNEW HE WANTED TO FULFILL HIS DREAM IN BUFFALO.

AND. WHEREAS, HOWARD SIMON BEGAN HIS RADIO CAREER IN ELMIRA, NEW YORK, IN TOLEDO, OHIO, WORKING IN NEWS, TRAFFIC REPORTING AND AS A COUNTRY MUSIC DJ, BEFORE RECEIVING HIS FIRST OPPORTUNITY TO WORK IN SPORTS RADIO WITH WJJL IN THE WESTERN NEW YORK REGION.

AND. WHEREAS, HOWARD SIMON MADE BUFFALO HIS HOME WHEN HE MET AND MARRIED JOANNE IN 1996.

AND TOGETHER THEY HAVE A SON, JONATHAN, WHO SHARES HIS FATHER'S LOVE FOR SPORTS AND CURRENTLY WORKS FOR THE NEW YORK YANKEES.

AND. WHEREAS, HOWARD SIMON'S CAREER IN BUFFALO INCLUDED WORKING FOR WJJL, WGN EMPIRE SPORTS NETWORK AND WJR, WHERE THE BROADCAST TEAM WON A MARCONI AWARD IN 2009 FOR SPORTS STATION OF THE YEAR AND RANKED FOURTH PLACE IN MID MARKET IN 2022 BY BARRETT SPORTS MEDIA.

AND. WHEREAS, HOWARD SIMON BROADCASTED DURING THE BUFFALO BILLS FOUR STRAIGHT SUPER BOWL APPEARANCES IN 91, 92, 93 AND 94, AND THE BUFFALO SABERS STANLEY CUP FINALS SERIES IN 1999 AND THE NCAA TOURNAMENT BERTH FOR EACH OF THE BIG FOUR SCHOOLS BUFFALO BANDITS CHAMPIONS AND BUFFALO BISONS CHAMPIONSHIP.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED.

THE ERIE COUNTY LEGISLATURE PAUSES IN ITS DELIBERATIONS TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE HOWARD SIMON FOR 33 YEARS OF SPORTS BROADCASTING, WHERE HIS WORK HELPED CONNECT THE COMMUNITY OF WESTERN NEW YORK SPORTS FANS.

AS WE CELEBRATE THRILLING VICTORIES AND OF COURSE, GRIEVED HEARTBREAKING DEFEATS TOGETHER.

THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THE BEST AND WORST TO US.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR RETIREMENT.

I'D LIKE TO BRING ADAM UP OVER HERE.

VERY THANKFUL, THANKFUL FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE A FAMILY TRADITION OF MINE, SOMETHING THAT I WAS BROUGHT UP IN AND

HAS SINCE BEEN PASSED ON TO ADAM AND AND HIS FAMILY OVER HERE.

AND, YOU KNOW, THE TRADITIONS THAT THAT HAPPEN IN LIFE SEEM TO GO AWAY OVER TIME.

AND THIS IS ONE THAT I BELIEVE IS A BUFFALO STAPLE.

IT'S BEEN AROUND FOREVER.

AND I REALLY HOPE THAT IT CONTINUES TO STAY AROUND.

AND THE WORK THAT ADAM AND CAMELIA FOODS IS DOING IS ENSURING THAT THE MALCZEWSKI BUTTER LAMBS WILL BE AROUND FOR A VERY LONG TIME TO COME.

THE BUTTER LAMBS WERE STARTED BY MY GRANDMOTHER IN 1963 AS SHE HAD A STAND AT THE BROADWAY MARKET MALCZEWSKI POULTRY SHOP.

AND WITH THAT STAND, OBVIOUSLY IT WAS POULTRY.

SHE HAD A WOODEN MOLD WHICH WAS BROUGHT OVER FROM POLAND BY HER FATHER THAT SHE FOUND IN THE ATTIC.

AND LOOKING TO EXPAND ON THE OFFERINGS DOWN THERE, THE BUTTER LAMB WAS BORN.

IT'S AMAZING HOW SOMETHING SO SMALL AND SIMPLE CAN CAN MOVE FORWARD INTO SOMETHING THAT, YOU KNOW, 50 OR 60 YEARS LATER HAS BECOME A STAPLE IN THE COMMUNITY.

UM, THE BUTTER LAMB BASICALLY WAS A CATHOLIC TRADITION.

THERE'S A MEANING BEHIND EVERYTHING ON THERE.

THE LAMB REPRESENTS JESUS CHRIST.

THE PEPPERCORNS AND THE EYES REPRESENT THE LIGHT OF GOD.

THE RED RIBBON AROUND THE NECK REPRESENTS THE BLOOD OF GOD.

AND THE ALLELUIA FLAG REPRESENTS PEACE ON EARTH.

AND THAT'S SOMETHING THAT HAS STAYED CONSISTENT OVER TIME.

IT'S GONE FROM A VERY STANDARD CATHOLIC TRADITION TO ALSO A TABLE DECORATION.

YOU DON'T NECESSARILY NEED TO BE CATHOLIC TO HAVE ONE OF THESE FINE PIECES OF ART ON YOUR TABLE OVER HERE.

I WAS FORTUNATE I WAS ABLE TO WORK DOWN THERE MY WHOLE LIFE.

AND EVERY TIME THE MEDIA CAME IN ON GOOD FRIDAY, I WAS TOSSED OVER THERE.

AND I'M HEARING THERE'S A VIDEO FROM 1989 THAT'S STILL ON A CONTINUOUS REEL OVER THERE AT THE MARKET THAT HAS A YOUNG JIM MALCZEWSKI CARRYING BUTTER LAMBS AROUND OVER THERE.

SO IF ANYBODY WANTS A GOOD LAUGH, I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND GOING AND LOOKING THAT UP.

BUT ON THAT NOTE, MY GRANDMOTHER WORKED DOWN AT THE MARKET.

SHE PASSED AWAY IN 2004.

UM, OR I'M SORRY, SHE RETIRED IN 2004.

SHE PASSED AWAY IN 2013.

CAMELIA CAME IN.

MY FATHER RAN THE BUSINESS FROM THE TIME MY GRANDMOTHER RETIRED.

THEY CAME IN AND TOOK OVER IN 2012 AND HAD THEIR FIRST YEAR OF PRODUCTION IN 2013.

I STAND HERE TODAY, TEN YEARS LATER, COMMENDING THEM ON EVERYTHING THAT THEY'VE DONE AND THEY'VE GROWN THE BUSINESS AND THEY'VE TAKEN IT FROM A LOCAL STAPLE COMPLETELY ACROSS TO THE EAST COAST OVER HERE.

AND I WAS FORTUNATE TO GO IN THEIR PRODUCTION FACILITY TWO WEEKS AGO WITH ADAM.

AND WHEN I WAS IN THERE, WHEN HE OPENED THAT DOOR, THAT SMELL OF BUTTER, IF YOU'VE NEVER HAD THAT WHERE YOU WALK INTO A BUTTER ROOM, IT'S AMAZING.

AND I HAVEN'T HAD THAT SMELL IN ABOUT 10 OR 15 YEARS.

SO IT WAS GREAT TO SEE THE WOODEN BULBS STILL IN USE OVER THERE THAT WERE BROUGHT OVER.

THEY'VE BEEN MODIFIED. THEY'VE BEEN UPDATED, BUT THEY'RE REALLY DOING EVERYTHING THAT THEY CAN TO CONTINUE THE TRADITION.

SO I'M VERY THANKFUL FOR THAT.

AND WITH THAT, I HAVE A PROCLAMATION OVER HERE WHICH I WILL READ.

THE ERIE COUNTY LEGISLATOR SEEKS THE LEGISLATURE SEEKS TO HONOR INSTITUTIONS IN ERIE COUNTY THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR UPHOLDING TRADITIONS THAT MAKE UP THE CULTURAL FABRIC OF OUR COMMUNITY.

AND. WHEREAS, CHAMELEON MEATS WAS FOUNDED IN 1935 BY MR. EDMUND CIHOCKI SENIOR, A POLISH IMMIGRANT WHO BEGAN HIS OWN BUTCHER BUTCHER SHOP AT 735 WILLIAM STREET, MAKING TRADITIONAL POLISH MEAT RECIPES. AND.

WHEREAS, CHAMELEON MEATS EVENTUALLY MOVED TO 1333, GENESEE STREET EXPANDED INTO A MANUFACTURING PLANT THROUGHOUT THE YEARS AND CONTINUED TO BUILD THE FAMILY BUSINESS THAT HAS BEEN OPERATED BY SEVERAL GENERATIONS OF THE CIHOCKI FAMILY.

AND. WHEREAS, IN 1963.

DORTHY. MALCZEWSKI OPENED A POULTRY STAND IN THE BROADWAY MARKET, THE HEART OF THE BUFFALO POLISH COMMUNITY, AND BEGAN SELLING BUTTER LAMBS AROUND EASTER SEASON, USING THE MOLD BROUGHT TO AMERICA BY HER IMMIGRANT FATHER FROM KRAKOW, POLAND.

AND. WHEREAS, THE BUTTER LAMB TRADITION ORIGINATES AS FAR BACK AS THE MIDDLE AGES IN EASTERN EUROPE AND IS A REFERENCE TO THE LAMB OF GOD WHICH REPRESENTS JESUS AND UNITES EASTERN MEAL WITH THE EUCHARIST OF THE HOLY COMMUNION.

AND. WHEREAS, DESPITE THE MALCZEWSKI BUTTER LAND BEING SOLD IN CHAIN SUPERMARKETS, MANY PEOPLE STILL MAKE THE JOURNEY TO THE BROADWAY MARKET AS PART OF THE ANNUAL EASTER

RITUAL. AND.

WHEREAS, IN 2012, CAMELLIA MEATS PURCHASED THE BUTTER LAMB BUSINESS AND BEGAN PRODUCTION IN EASTER OF 2013.

IN ORDER TO CONTINUE THIS VERY IMPORTANT POLISH NOW BUFFALONIAN TRADITION THAT HAS EXISTED FOR OVER EIGHT CENTURIES.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE ERIE COUNTY LEGISLATURE PAUSES IN ITS DELIBERATIONS TO RECOGNIZE CHAMELEON MEATS ON THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR PRODUCTION OF THE MALCZEWSKI BUTTER LAMB, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, FOR SAFEGUARDING THE SACRED CULTURAL TRADITION THAT HAS SPREAD THROUGHOUT OUR COMMUNITY AND BECOME PART OF OUR LOCAL CUSTOMS. SO, ADAM, I THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

I'LL SAY IT'S BEEN A IT'S BEEN A CRAZY TEN YEARS.

I WAS ONLY ABOUT 22 YEARS OLD WHEN I WAS THROWN INTO THE BUTTER LAND BUSINESS.

I KNOW JIM STARTED OUT PROBABLY MUCH YOUNGER THAN THAT WITH HIS GRANDMOTHER, AND HE'S ON THAT 1989 VIDEO.

AGAIN, IF ANYBODY WANTS TO COME DOWN AND SPEND ON LOOP FOR THE PAST LIKE FIVE YEARS AT THE BROADWAY MARKET SO YOU CAN SEE HIM WALKING AROUND WITH THEM.

BUT EVERY YEAR, THE PAST TEN YEARS, I'VE TRIED TO I'VE TRIED TO STREAMLINE THE PROCESS OF MAKING THESE BUTTER LAMBS.

THIS YEAR WE'VE MADE 100,000 OF THESE.

YOU CAN FIND THEM NOT ONLY IN YOUR LOCAL SUPERMARKETS IN BUFFALO, BUT THEY'RE IN DETROIT, MICHIGAN, CLEVELAND, THEY'RE ALL THE WAY DOWN SOUTH INTO MARYLAND, THE VIRGINIAS.

A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS ITEM IS, BUT A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY IN A LOT OF STATES THAT DO HAVE THE SAME TRADITION THAT WAS BROUGHT OVER FROM THEIR GENERATIONS OVER FROM POLAND AND MANY OTHER EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES.

SO IT'S BEEN AN HONOR TO CONTINUE THIS TRADITION.

I PLAN ON CONTINUING IT FOR ANOTHER DECADE AND EVEN MORE MAYBE PASS IT DOWN TO MY KIDS ONE DAY.

BUT IT AGAIN, WAS AN HONOR FOR YOUR YOUR DAD, YOUR GRANDMA, AND YOU, TOO, TO RECOGNIZE US AND OUR HISTORY OF BEING A FOURTH GENERATION BUSINESS TO CARRY THIS ON FOR ALL THESE YEARS. SO THANKS AGAIN.
